A wide angle lens would be prefered but you can do a panorama with any lens.

Actually, depending on your goal, you might want a different lens.
If you want to increase image quality and resolution, then using a telephoto and taking a lot of member shots is often how these are done. If you want to stitch the fewest number of images to create the pano, then using a wide angle lens (or even a fisheye) is preferred. It's not the lens, though, as much as it is your stitching software and how you rotate the lens to cover the space. Outdoor panos with no nearby objects can often be done handheld. Indoors, in tighter spaces with nearby objects to cause parallax, you may need a panohead (or other technique like a philopod) to rotate the lens around its no-parallax/nodal point. I'd recommend Hugin if you want to get serious about panorama stitching, as it's the open source front-end of choice for nearly every serious graphics geek programmer out there, and has some seriously cool toys built in. But some folks find it, like the Gimp, to be serious overkill. So, if you just want a push-button stitcher, Autostitch is probably the program choice for you. If you can afford to pay for a push-button solution, PTGui is also a good piece of software.

That's definetly stitching, not an individual lens.
I've done stitching with lenses from 18 to 100mm, and I have to say that they give VERY different views, even stitched. I did a pano of 39 frames taken at 70mm on Mt Polychrome in Denali National Park. Printed at 300DPI Id have a print 9" high and 18'6" long.
