A 70-200mm is always a great lens for portrait sessions, covering both types of shots with one lens is quite convenient. I hear that 135mm is too short for good candid work like you want.

I don't think with someone really camera shy it would be a great idea to use a 70-200. It's a huge lens, and if you rack it out to 200mm you're going to have to stand a ways away to get shot framed, and nothing makes camera shy people more nervous than a photographer pointing a huge honking lens their direction.
That said a 85mm will still give you plenty of distance, and it won't look as intimidating. I think the best way to go about something like this would be to just get him used to the camera... the longer you're there, the more he'll get used to it. Good luck. |
