Default Any thoughts on the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS

In need of a budget zoom... any thoughts/experience with this one?
Obviously, I don't want to buy something that isn't clear/sharp... if this isn't crisp, I'll just save up a bit longer for something that is

I'm also considering this one... the Canon 75-300 f/4.0-5.6 USM

I'm not familiar with the Canon 55-250, but I've heard that the 75-300 isn't all that great. For that reason, I went with the Sigma 70-300 APO and I'm pretty happy with it. I posted in your other thread about lenses, too, there's a link to examples of pics I've taken with the Sigma.

Awesome! Going to read reviews/do homework on it now. Thanks for the suggestion!
I've got a trip coming up this week that I'd really like to get a decent lens for before I leave.
Preferably something crisp that I wouldn't always have to have a tripod for to get a clean shot at 200+.

Take a look at the lens reviews on Photozone. They do a really good job.

I've never used Canon 75-300 but I am using Canon EFS 55-250 IS which is very nice.

I did comparison test between Canon EFS 55-250 IS and Sigma 70-300. The point I would like to share with you is about IS as well because it does really help you a lot especially when you use long focal length and/or slow shutter speed.

Comparison Sigma APO DG Macro 70-300 vs Canon EF-S 55-250 IS

look into the 70-210 3.5-4.5 USM or the 100-300 4.5-5.6 USM
both are great with full time manual focus and nothing moves or rotates when focusing and both use ring USM canons best focus system. both are old and a bit harder to find but go for around the 150-250 range and are both rather sharp and fast for budget zooms.
EDIT
also i have used the 55-250 but didnt like its focus or feel but pq was pretty good and IS was great

I use 55-250 and would say that it is good for day time photography. At night time, it is really slow but it is still good.

I dont have any experience with 70-300 so cant comment on it.

I like my 55-250 pretty well, as long as I have enough light.
here's a few samples. Not the best pics but I was pleased with it's performance in these instances, especially since they are between 200- 250mm.

i love my 55-250. The IS is very helpful, and it's pretty crisp for a zoom.
