I'm glad you asked this question. I'm researching the same lens.
All the reviews I've read suggest the sharpness is pretty sweet overall... but a tripod is recommended for shots over 200mm. Take that for what it's worth, as I'm in the same boat you are... no actual experience with it, just looking about possibly purchasing one.

You sure you're not confusing the 70-300 IS USM with the 75-300 III? Two completely different lenses. The 70-300 IS USM is a much newer and better design, but around $500.
I'd recommend looking at this thread. Basically, if you have to have a cheap lens, it's ok. The Sigma 70-300 APO might be a slightly better buy. But if you can afford them, in order of increasing price/quality, you'd probably want to look at the EF-S 55-250 IS, EF 70-300 IS USM, and EF 70-200 f/4L USM. the-digital-picture.com has a side-by-side review of these three lenses.
