Default "made for",lens hood

I just bought an EF 17-40 L and the lens hood that came with it does nothing on my 1.6 mount. Does any one have any experience using non-Canon made lens hoods? I see the EW-83J which should work fine for my lens retails for >$50 whereas a "made for" Canon EW-83J is <$10. I use all Canon gear, but this is ridiculous if they are "the same".
Thanks for any help.
Rich

Oddly, the only lens I don't use a hood on is my 17-40 L lens. I use a hood on all my other lenses.

I have no experience with 3rd party hoods. If the hood is working right, you shouldn't see it in your viewfinder. The hood is for blocking lens flare.

BYW, I have a 30D, which is a crop sensor.

Your hood is working, trust me.

I suspect that it is working. What makes you think that it isn't?

Compatible hoods for 1.6 mount:

EW-83J from EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS
EW-83DII from EF 24 f/2.4 L

The third-party hood may have the same shape but it can be made with inferior material. Otherwise, you are just paying more for Canon accessories.
