OK, here is another idea. Sell the D40x, which is a noisy camera that was actually a higher price down grade from the D40 and buy a used D80 and a 50mm f/1.8 you will likely end up with a little extra money in your pocket as opposed to spending over $400 on that lens.

BTW a 50mm lens on a crop body sensor is actually not a very useful focal length. People get them because they are cheap sharp lenses. If you really want that AF-S prime you would be much better off with a 35mm.

I had this EXACT same question earlier this year, and I ended up going with the AF-S 35mm 1.8. Not only was the price a big drawing point, but also the 50mm is just a bit too cropped... especially since the main reason I wanted the f/1.8 is for indoor shots with bad light so I don't have to bump up the ISO. In a small/medium sized room, that 50mm is going to limit your shots because of that tight crop.

I bought the 35mm f/1.8 and am IN LOVE with it. And it's fabulous for portraits too! That's my recommendation!

Did you decide which lens to buy? I am in the same exact boat and doing tons of research and even consulted a CSI who also suggested to spend more and just get the 50mm.

I am getting a new addition to the family and was looking for the 50mm or the 35mm. I mainly want to do family pics using availible lighting, especially during the holiday time.

I am not a pro, but do know alittle more that the rest. Eventually I want to graduate to the 300 or full frame, but not just yet. My D40 fits well in my diaper bag even with all the baby stuff!
