Default Tripod Help??

I need some help with hooking my Canon Rebel XS to an old tripod.
The tripod just has a screw, and it wont hold in my camera for some reason. Do I need some kind of head for it or what?
Thanks!

Well, if it's just a standard tripod, then there should be a square-shaped piece that you can screw into the bottom of your camera. Then that piece locks into the tripod stand, securing your camera to the tripod.

Does that make sense? If not, I can post some pictures of the tripod I use.

No problem.

Just make sure the piece isn't already attached to tripod. The reason I say that is because the tripod stand itself shouldn't have a screw in it (unless there are some that do and I don't know about them); the piece that attaches to your camera has the screw.

I've had those "duh" moments when I have been looking for the piece, and then I realized that I left it attached to the tripod. Haha.

Actually, can you show us a picture of the problem? A lot of this depends on whether or not you have tripod legs that need a head, or an integrated tripod with a weird threaded screw or something.

You really shouldn't need a quick release/plate combination to connect your camera to the tripod. It should screw directly in. However, if your head is for a medium-format camera or something, it might be using the 3/8"-16 thread instead of the 1/4"-20 thread most dSLRs take.

My guess is that you may only have the tripod legs and may need a head to attach to it.

Hard to tell from the shot, but it looks like that's on a tripod head, and it should fit your camera, but I can't tell if the threads have been stripped or something. Also not sure what that washer thing is. Why is it not fitting your camera? (threads stripped? Too big, too small?)

Can you unscrew the head from the legs? Or is it attached?

I think the head is screwed onto the legs but I'm not sure I'll go check.
I think the screw might be a little too small but idk? I think it is just that something is not making the screw hold. Idk. It's about 50 yrs old, it was my dad's dad's tri-pod a long long time ago.

Yeah, it looks like the screw is worn. It may be that you just need to replace the head on the tripod.
