Default Gels

Well I got a bit of money set aside to buy some photo stuff and I was thinking buying a set of gels with my flash. I have a Nikon SB-600 and I know they have a color correction kit called the SJ-1. From a few reviews I have read they tend not to stay on very well.

I also hear that a lot of people just cut their own gels out of larger sheets and tape them onto their flashes.

I want to know if the SJ-1 kits is any good or should I just for for the gel sheets. Also dose anyone know of a good set of sheets that would cover most lighting corrections (CTO, CTB, and florescent)

Yup.......I use the cut method. I purchased a complete set of CTO and CTB 12 x 12" filters There's 2 sets of each filter in the package. Double CTB, Full CTB, 1/2 CTB, 1/4 CTB, 1/8 CTB and Durham Daylight Frost in the Tungeten to Daylight pack and 2 of each: Full CTO, 3/4 CTO, 1/2 CTO, 1/4 CTO, 1/8 CTO and Full CTO + .6ND Combo in the Daylight to Tungsten pack. Think I paid about $32.00 US a pack.

if i could find any locally i'd buy the real thing.. for now i've bene making do with cello-wrap (whatever its called)

you can stack the amount of film for the intensity of colour.. , or blend them to make other colours.
EG. this week i wanted green.. alli did was stack blue and yellow... bingo.. instant serial killer.

no real suggestions sorry.. just a "make do" alternative i've been using.

I believe that you can get some free sample gel kits from rostco and some of the other gel manufacturers. I believe there are some posts on the forums about this.
