Default Help with an old Flash

Hi,

A friend of mine has a Starblitz 3600 TWIN which she used on her Pentax Film camera. The flash was bought about two decades ago.

I have a nikon D80 and SB600 and would like to use this Starblitz flash for a portrait lighting. On searching on the internet, I learnt that this flash cannot be mounted on my D80 as the voltage is high.

My question is, Can I remotely fire this flash to work with my D80? If yes, what equipment will I need?

You can use the flash as a manual flash off camera. There are a couple of ways to fire it. The easiest and cheapest is to get a flash detector base to attach to the base. Any on-camera flash from your camera will then fire the Starblitz when it detects the flash. I would reccomend using a handheld flash meter when doing this.

Denja,

Thanks for the information. Can you tell me where can I buy this flash detector? I searched the internet and did not find any product like that.

Thanks,
Shantanu

If you go to a camera store, one that sell high end cameras, and is staffed by photographers, they should be able to help you.

Or, click on the link.

I believe what you are looking for is called Flash Synchronizer. I have an old one made by Konica but I think the company Wein also offers them. Wein has a hotshoe to Hotshoe unit which will lower the voltage coming from the flash into the camera and will also offer a Sync socket, if i remember correctly.

Quo Fan,

Thanks for the information.

Lokki,

I wanted to fire the flash remotely as I am afraid of my camera electronics being fried if the flash is connected using physical contacts.

Lokki may be talking about the following 'Wein SSHSHS Safe-Sync Hot Shoe to Hot Shoe with PC Socket' adapter. I have one myself and it works with any old flash on modern DSLR.
