The Lightsphere
Anyone ever use one? I saw this mentioned in another thread. I checked out the web site, and watched the video. If this is for real. I must have one. http://store.garyfonginc.com/lightsphere.html |

My first thought is "Are those images straight off the camera or photoshopped?"
The lightsphere (and the whaletail) both look amazing from the images shown! Guess if i get into doing portraits (not done any yet but who knows) that would be awesome |

I bought one about two weeks ago. And yes, it's that good. It's a little cumbersome to use, but produces fabulous results.

Yes, it works pretty well, but so do many things that diffuse light.
I agree, it is a bit cumbersome, and you'll get fairly odd reactions as to why you have a fishbowl on your camera. If you want to try something, take a 1/2 gallon milk/water jug (not sure if that is a global sized product), and cut the bottom out, then cut the top to fit your flash. If you are only playing around, this makes for a good start for a cheap DIY project. Also, have a look at these: http://www.abetterbouncecard.com/ http://home.comcast.net/~dougsmit/bounceflashtoys.html http://www.listsanddiagrams.com/arch...0/diffuser.htm There are also some interesting snoots you can build with a bunch of straws... I also have a new light modifier I plan on testing/documenting and releasing some details on in the very near future - one that I haven't found anywhere on the internet. |

i don't think it would work as well for portraits taken in a studio setting (with studio light/s and all)...but it great for other situations wherein you would need to use our off cam flash...

i, personally, would never buy it and that's also the general concensus over at the POTN forums. it's overpriced and i don't want to say useless, but better items can be made for next to nothing.
my advice would be to save your money and DIY

Well, so would a milk jug over the flash be, but if it works patent the ugly thing! I use an semi-opaque plastic lid in front of my pop up flash on my P&S. Some people think I'm weird, but it just works! (Free, can find anywhere, don't care if I loose it, fits in my pocket).

i made something similar for my canon flash. i also made a homemade stoffen-type diffuser for my nikon flash. don't know why you say this is ugly? i've seen plenty of pros use DIY 'ghetto' gear. it's not how it looks, but what it does. if you're concerned about how your gear looks, you're looking at the wrong thing. in addition... if someone is looking at your stuff and cares enough about what you're using, i'm sure they understand exactly why you have what you have and probably have something similar themselves.

Matt, add a tag that say "Ghetto Gear" and everyone will be asking where they can buy one (even if they have no idea what it's for) LOL...
