Default What's your "walk-around" lens?

i recently got myself a sigma 24-70 2.8 as my temporary "walk-around" lens, but i'm actually saving up for canon's 24-105 L f4 that, in my opinion, will serve the same purpose better.

while i haven't yet decided (with finality) which will be my walk-around lens, i'm curious as to what yours is...

I use a 24-85 Nikkor, to me, it's lacking a bit on the long end. Just enough to be frustrating on occassion.

I use a 18-135mm Nikkor. It was the lens that came with the camera but I really like it. It works great for some landscape and has just enough reach.

Currently using the Canon 18-55 kit lens as my walkaround, until I get enough money to buy a Canon 17-85.

If Canon would make a 18-200 I would definitely buy it. I know 3rd party makers like Sigma have lenses of this focal range, but the main reason why I didn't buy one is the narrow aperture of f/6.3 at the long end. This wouldn't allow it to autofocus on my camera, which requires f/5.6 or faster, and I'm not really up to using manual focus.

My walk around lens is my 18-55 AF-S Nikkor - but I do very little walking around with it. My "Drive around" lens is my 55-200VR which I use most of the time. I drive around Morris County NJ quite a lot and take many picture of animals and other nature shots either from the car or I pull over and walk into the woods. The ability to zoom in is critical for me. Plus the longer focal length lets me blur the background behind the animal.

I use a 14 - 45 Zoom Olympus with my E-330 Olympus ( Not everyone uses Canon or Nikon) also have Sigma 55-200 zoom. I also carry my P&S Olympus C-4000 zoom. Works fine for me.

I only have two lenses so don't have a lot of choice. The kit lens is more flexible and has the advantage that it records the aperture in the EXIF data.

The 50mm lens is so manual that I have to remember where the aperture ring was so I tend to leave it in one place for a given session. Mind you, sometimes I think working within that restriction can force me to be more imaginative about the kind of pictures I take.

For example, see my recent set of pictures from the garden at RHS Harlow Carr. That was an afternoon walking around with the 50mm (and occasionally putting the Raynox macro adapter on) and I got plenty of pictures I am very pleased with.

Of course, both are small enough and light enough that they don't pose a problem when carrying them round all afternoon; if I had some longer zoom lenses I might have a bit more to contribute!

Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. Lovely lens, does well in low light covers the distance I like to shoot. Sometimes I think I miss a liitle on the wide end, but I can always pull out my kit lens for that since I rarely need it.
Whitemug, I'm saving up for the same lens you are; think it would be great for travel.

I leave the Canon 18-55 kit lens on my camera most of the time, since it is lightweight and easy to get in and out of the bag. But, I rarely go anywhere without my bag and the 70-300mm lens, so i really use whatever the situation calls for.
I rarely use my fisheye...although it did come in handy the other day.

My walkaround lens is my Canon EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM. With 36.4-390mm effective focal range on my camera, it covers the wide-angle to super telephoto range. So it's the lens I usually bring when I can bring only one. It's also the lens that is on my camera most of the time. If I could bring another lens, I also bring my Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM to cover the ultra-wide-angle range.
