I think my walk around lens is the Canon 24-105L. I just received the Canon 17-55 so I'm using that right now and will see which I like better as an every day lens.

My current walkaround is the Fuji 55/1.8. Yeah, it's short...but the 1.8 - 16 stop range offers lots of low-light possibilities as well as DoF options.

Call me crazy

I'd hardly call 55 short on a 1x let alone 1.6 crop factor.

I used to carry the Canon 28-200 3.5-5.6 around, but I just got a new lens, the Canon 28-135 IS so now that serves as my walkaround/all-purpose lens.

I only have the Nikon AF-S 18-70 [we opted to go with it rather than the 18-55 kit lens], thus making it my walk-around lens by default

I'm considering the purchase of a longer lens [either the 55-200 VR or the 70-300 VR and I'm now leaning toward the latter], in which case the 18-70 would remain my normal walk-around lens and the longer would become my walk-around specifically for things like wildlife.

Hoping to buy eventually: A long long long time from now, maybe I'll get the Nikkor 70-300mm AF-S f/4.5-5.6G VR or a Nikkor 18-200 AF-S f/3.5-5.6G VR.

Haha, I meant "short" as in "not long" It seems most responses so far have been in the 105-200mm range on the long side. And the 55 never changes sooo

Plus, the lens itself is maybe 2 inches long making it very short indeed...

Default Walk around delimma

Good timing for this thread… I have spent the last week or so trying to work out whether to upgrade my walkaround or purchase a wide angle to compliment my current one… let me explain:

I currently use a Canon 28-135 IS. This has been fantastic over the past 18 months I've had it and has done exactly what I have wanted for a walk around. However 3 months ago we packed up our lives in New Zealand and have moved to the UK. Strangely enough the 28mm simply hasn't felt wide enough (its on a 1.6 crop 30D) here in the UK where theres more people and less open space… Getting far enough away from the subject to make the 28mm work is just that little harder over here! I am finding the old, hardly used in NZ, kit 18-55mm spending more and more time on the camera.

So now my options are:
** Upgrade to a 24-105L which should give me the bredth I'm after.
** Or, go for a wide angle (like the 10-22mm) to replace the kit lens to compliment the 28-135, and put up with the increase in lens changes (which isn't particularly bothering me, but has ment I've missed a couple of shots).

Thoughts??? Any advise people can give???

Get the 10-22. 6.4mm (4 x 1.6) on the wide end won't make a terrible difference, it'll probably be only barely noticeable.

pernod, I'm thinking that you should go wider than the 24-105 as well. The 24 vs 28, though noticeable, isn't that much wider really.
