Can someone explain (in simple terms!) the difference between these two lenses? What makes the second one more than twice the price of the other & what is 'DO Element'?

I can't answer your question other than to say that's extremely odd. I'd never pay that much for variable aperture glass.

You are looking for the difference between the 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS and the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS. The main difference is the DO or Diffractive Optics. Basically this technology is what makes this lens smaller, lighter and more expensive than it's cousin. I have read reviews where people complain about the DO's lack of sharpness, even compared to the less expensive non-DO. Here are some reviews for the non DO and the DO.

That's very useful - thank you.

Would anybody care to take a look at a dslr lens choice I have chosen?

I've decided on recently buying a dslr, without the kit lens (of course!). I'm been looking around for a fairly decent zoom lens.. and would like some others' opinions on it.

The Tamron Autofocus 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF)
here!

I believe I saw it on the "most popular lens" blog on DPS awhile ago... any opinions?

As you can see below, I own this lens. I use it as my "walk around" and it is probably on my camera more than any other. It is sharp and because of the 2.8, great in lower light. I've been very pleased with it.
