tlake, I also have a 7d and for the holidays received a Manfrotto 055XPROB with a 498RC2ballhead. My largest lens is a Tamron 70-300mm 4/5.6 USD lens and wanted something able to handle the full rig.
Although not exactly the same, this thing is SOLID with all caps. The ability to both easily adjust yet provide an extremely stable support mechanism is superb, particularly based on the price band. Suits my needs and level of expertise perfectly. My only minor grievance is that the QR plate was somewhat loose upon receipt but a quick turn of a 4mm allen wrench and problem solved although based on the other general level of quality I found it surprising. Good luck and hope this info may be helpful! |

I'd suggest the 055XPROB: the centre column adjustments that are possible with the PRO version (over the standard D) are considerable, and important. Its a bit bigger and heavier, but worth it.
As for a head: just about any head that you like that can support the camera's weight should be fine. I prefer 3-way heads to ball-heads, so I opted for an 804RC2 instead.

I've gone to some lesser known but equally as 'tripod like' and more cool than Manfrotto... and am now a 3LeggedThing Pro (I just use their gear)
3LeggedThing.com worth a look. Sime

I've also got the Manfrotto 055XPROB with a 496RC-2 ball head.
I have had it about a month and absolutely love it so far. I love all the configurations I can put it in with the horizontal center column and it is very stable in most configurations. |
