Default Need help with purchasing a lens

So i don't know a lot about lenses, Im in no way a photographer I just enjoy takin pictures as hobby, but I slowly want to get into it more

Right now I'm using a canon rebel 1100d and I have a 50mm lens and a 75-300mm both were cheap under 100$

I wanna buy a new lens a good all around one, not to pricey around 300$ maybe more to around 500 but I'm lost in knowing what I should look at

Any ideas? I enjoy taking lot of long exposure shots and that sorta stuff, do what are some good lenses for that and I'm also going to do some traveling I wanna buy a new one for that too

Any info would be great thanks!!!

Let me start by asking you what you're unhappy with about your current lens?

A good all round, including holiday and long exposure pics, is a "standard zoom".

You my find this intro to lenses tutorial (on this site) helpful.

I would suggest that at the moment you have nothing 'standard' in your setup, as Richard described.

you need something from say 16mm-50, IMHO

Just unhappy with the 50mm cause it seems to close up

And thx for the link,

What's really the difference between a 150$ 18-55mm lens and. 20-70mm lens that's 1300$ like the pictures more clear an focuses faster?

For a standard lens that goes wide (18mm) lots of choices, even in the Canon range, see here for the crop camera (not 5 & 1 series) models. Have a look at the reviews.

Canon EF-S Lens Reviews

The 18-55 is good value for money (I own one) and the 15-85 is probably the best one (I don't own one). The 17-85 is OK (I own one), but not as good as the 15-85.

I do not have any experience of the Canon super wide angle (10-22), which is reported to be good, as I have a Tokina 12-24 (I am happy with it), however there a better options around now days from Tokina and Tamron.

My standard lens is the Canon 24-105 which is not wide for a crop camera but great on a 5D (which is what I use)

What kind of photos do you like to take? Do you find yourself getting in close to your subjects more often than not, or do you tend to keep your distance and zoom in for the shot?

I have the Canon 10-22mm and it is a very nice lens. It was not cheap and it doesn't have image stabilization. It is good for architectural photos and landscapes if the setting is right.

If you just want a good, basic walkaround zoom (not an ultrawide) for around $300, then I'd recommend looking for a used EF-S 17-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM. It was replaced by the EF-S 15-85 IS USM (which goes for around $700), but is still a great lens on a crop body, and a good performer. The only complaints about it (which the 15-85 corrected) were a small amount of C/A, softness, and distortion at 17mm.

If you want an ultrawide for very large vistas, or to shoot in very small spaces, then then EF-S 10-22 and the Sigma/Tamron/Tokina counterparters are worth investigating, but you unlikely to find one of these, even used, for under $500.
