Default Flash Bracket for Canon

Hey guys,

Before I forget again, I need to buy a flash bracket for obvious reason. I was looking at the Manfrotto 233b flash bracket and looked great until I read/realised that it's not easy to do quick landscape-portrait (vice versa) shifts using this bracket.

Can anyone recommend one that I can use with my Canon 30D or 40D with battery grip and canon flash transmitter? Will be using this for a wedding so I do need something that is quick to flip (either camera or flash) to change shooting mode from landscape to portrait or vice versa. Not to be used with tripod as I do handheld shots 99% of the time. I can't really afford to spend anything more than $120, but still interested in hearing what is highly recommended regardless of budget.

What do you guys think of this? http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Flash-Bra...ht_2869wt_1165

Sorry if I don't reply for at least 8 hours as it's sleep time here - so won't be able to respond or check for replies till the morning.

Cheers and many thanks for your help!

Grace

I guess no one uses flash brackets.

Nope, not really. Since the newer OEM top-of-the-line flashes have heads that rotate 360°, cameras are giving cleaner images at very high isos, and everybody's learned how to use radio triggers for off-camera flash, most folks don't really need them that much, any more.

Try this:

Hehe, first website I went to last night to do my research

The problem I am having and where I am hoping flash bracket will help is that I am constantly using fill flash with my shoots outdoors, nowhere to bounce, with moving children. So I am constantly on the move and can't set up off-camera flash on stands. I have had to resort to on-camera flash, however, I am sick and tired of cleaning up red-eyes, centred 'catchlight' or flash dots in eyes, and yes, that cumbersome side shadow with portrait shots.

Not a fan of on-flash diffusers, but I guess I'll try that if I can't find any other alternatives.

What would you do in my case?

The Stroboframe flip bracket was the "standard". It's available for under $50

Thanks, Steve

I had that on the short list, but then I read that it doesn't work with battery grip. Also, I have to use my canon transmitter on the hot shoe as I don't have a cord with my flashes so this makes things a little more complicated.

Sigh. I really do hate all this tech and gear research and thinking. Just not my strong point and favourite part of photography.

I've figured it out.

Instead of using a flash bracket, I'm going to get a helmet and mount my flash on it with sticky tape and glue. At first I was going to sticky tape my flashes on a stick as husband suggested, but then I'm clevererer than him and thought the helmet would work better.

Yeah! How professional will that look!!

Better than this guy.

Honestly? Wandering around Comic-con, I went OCF, and just forcibly kept recruiting bystanders to hold my light, or shooting with camera in one hand, and the flash with a small 8" softbox (cheap eBay knock off of an EzyBox Speed-Lite) in the other. But then, I was shooting people who'd stop and pose for me.

Ah yes, I do have one of those mini softboxes that you attach to the flash. It's small and square, really cheap. This was my back up just in case I can't sort myself out with a flash bracket or Gary Fong diffusers ( which I'm not convinced would benefit me greatly, only Gary Fong's pockets).

Unfortunately, my subjects don't pose as I tend to do candid shots. My clients love the fact that they are candid and hence they hired me as they are not big fans of posed photos. Of course, it doesn't make it easy to set up artificial lighting in this type of candid scenarios.

Damn. On-Helmet Flash is beginning to sound more inviting...............I think this can work if I can find a way to be a great Drunken Master Photographer.
