I will soon be traveling to several European cities and want to capture some of the architecture. I have a Nikon D300 and want a wide angle zoom that won't break the bank. Unfortunately, that rules out the Nikon options. Any suggestions?
Tom

Sigma 10-20 or Tokina 11-16(faster/better)...but I don't know about using a wide for architecture...there will be significant distortion in many cases.

Hi, You could find the Sigma 8-16 really useful for architecture not to mention a thousand and one other subjects. The lens is so wide at 8mm on an APS-C sensor camera such as your D300 that you are able to tilt the camera back parallel to the subject thereby avoiding the dreaded "falling over building" syndrome. A disadvantage is that you may end up with some undesired foreground which needs to be cropped out.
I haven't personally used the 8-16mm, I have the identical coverage Sigma 12-24mm which I use on my full frame SLR. It works really well and none of the major camera manufacturers have an equivalent lens. It's the only non camera manufacturer lens I use. Polarisers aren't practical with such a wide field of view, but that's not really relevant as the lens doesn't take add on filters anyway, it has a huge bulbous front element. Technique wise this works with any ultra wide lens and Kodak were recommending it in their professional photography guides back in the 70's. Good luck |
