Default Boudoir Help.

Some girlfriends of mine want to rent a hotel room and take some Boudoir pictures for their significant others for valentines day. I only do outdoor pictures usually and want to try it out for fun. I have a canon rebel eos xs, 70-300 lens and 18-24 lens.

What kind of lighting do you suggest I rent?
Also, what size lens?

i'd say it depends on the size of the hotel room.

i would suggest a 50mm, but if it's small you might not be able to move back far enough to frame the shot properly. perhaps a 35mm?

i'm not great with lighting, so far i just work with an SB 600 but i really would like to get another speedlite.

no idea what the flashes in the canon line are like

Ed Verosky had a few ebooks that would help you out immensely in this area. Gives good pose ideas as well lighting set ups.

assuming those lenses you have are 3.5-5.6 aperture, you could use them very well with the right lighting equipment and know how of the equipment you may or may not rent. Such as in this case I would buy a 3rd party flash unit, plus a 3rd party wireless trigger, but I don't know your budget on buying or renting so its playing the dark. If you have no budget I would rent a pocket wizard transceiver and receiver with a 580 ex II (since you are using canon gear). All you need is one I think to make some very interesting shots, or no flash and go with a very wide opening lens such as 1.2 to 1.4 fixed aperture lens. Since you have a crop sensor it would be difficult to find an L lens with a super wide angle unless you don't need or want zoom then I would go with a 14mm f/2.8 L lens that goes as low as f/2.8. Not sure where you rent lenses but I just rented a lens from Borrowlenses.com and rented a Tokina 11-16mm fisheye f/2.8 designed for my crop sensor because I'm shooting indoor environmental portraits next weekend. I haven't found any super wide angle in the canon brand lenses with a wider aperture of 2.8 yet, if I had a full frame I would use a 50mm 1.2 though.

You could really do the lighting quite nicely with one or two flash units as long as you can get them off camera. So, wireless transmitters (unless your camera has a built in flash commander - I shoot Nikon and my D300 does). Most hotel rooms have some nice sheers on the windows, if you can get a flash behind them, even pointing straight up, it would give you a nice big softbox and provide good wrap around light.

For lenses, the faster the better. If you want to isolate your subject from the background of the room then smaller F-stops would be a big help. You could certainly do it with what you have though.
