Default Which flash?

A couple of things... I have a Canon T3 and I'm looking for an external flash that's good for indoor pictures and even just good for snapshots indoors. The on-board flash of course, does the pictures no justice... so I'm hoping an external flash to bounce off the walls/ceilings etc will help. I have a one year old and I'm not only taking snapshots of him daily, but enjoy taking some more fun/posed shots for family and of course my family photo gallery wall! My last batch of photos with him were great cuz the weather allowed us outside, but now with it being winter, the light inside isn't enough!
Anyways...
What are the important things to look for in an external flash? And what do they mean? Total beginner here!! I've been looking at a couple... do any of these look good?

I ordered the Canon Speedlight 430 at Mello Digital, they called me this morning and said that it is on backorder for at least 4 weeks. They "upgraded" me to the Vivitar DF-483-CAN, I should have it by Tuesday. I can let you know how it works. They said it is an upgrade and better than the one I ordered.

I am going to be really upset if I paid $229 for the Vititar and it is $155 on Amazon. Is that for a new one?

Oh no! That's horrible. Do you think the Vivitar is actually any good then?

Ok I got it for $229, sells on their site for $299. It comes with a case, recharable batteries, warrenty, and charging cord. I will try it out and if I do not like it I will get my money back. Is this a good flash, the Vivitar?

I sure hope it is! Hopefully we'll get some feedback from someone! I like the price and it seems like good functions and such!
