Also a EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 II for only $100, and a Tamron 28-300mm f3.5-6.3 for $275. What does the 'L' mean, is it just a faster lens?
The 70-300L is much better than the 70-300. Completely different lens. The "L" just means it's pro glass and going to cost a lot more money but you're getting better image quality, build, etc from it.

Rent some lens before you dive into it though.

Thanks guys, I think I will probably take your advice and rent a lens. This will most likely be a once in a lifetime trip.

GTurner, are you from SA? We'll be spending a week in/near Durban with friends who live there, then almost 2 weeks with a tour group going from Joburg to Capetown, Kruger, Vic Falls and back. Any advice for things to see (although that is mostly scripted already) or for safety concerns?

My dad was there last year and took his D90 and 18-200vr, based on his results I think you want faster glass. I would think for most cases a 70-200 f/2.8 would be good, maybe bring a TC with you also.

Well I've been thinking of upping my budget and purchasing a (perhaps used) Canon 100-400 L. However, I've noticed that many of the ones I'm seeing for sale are quite old. How much of a concern is this and how much would you pay for one from 1998 or 2004, assuming the general condition is similar? There are a few on ebay ranging from 800-1300, and a couple locally asking 1300-1500. What do you think?

Andrew and gturner, I will get around to pm'ing you guys too. Thanks for the offers of advice.
