Default Need advice on filters

Hello,

I'm going to be hitting the photo store this weekend to replace a lost lens cap, and I'm also interested in picking up a few filters. (Specifically, I'm interested in a neutral density filter.) I know that one's shots are only as good as one's filters -- that is, put a crummy filter on your Canon L glass and your photos will suffer -- but I'm at a loss as to what constitutes a "good" filter.

How do I tell the good from the bad? Is it as simple as looking for certain brands, or choosing an expensive one, or is it more nuanced than that?

Stick to B+W brand filters, and you'll be fine. Now you just need to decide how strong of a ND you're looking for: B+W make them up to 10-stops (3.0, 1000x)

Basically stick to name brands. Hoya, B+W, Tiffen etc.

I believe the good B+W filters will run about $100. Same for Lee and Singh-Ray.

I use Hoya HMC filters. Not the most expensive but the best of the affordable filters IMHO.

Stay away from Promaster, Sunpak etc.
