Default Lens Hood??

Sorry if this is a total noob question but what is the value in using a lens hood? Are there different kinds? When and why would you use one??

Just curious

Well there's two basic reasons for using a lens hood.

1) It reduces lens flare because it's blocking the sun from directly hitting the glass
2) Protection. A lot of people have had their lenses saved from either dropping them, or knocking them up against something, because of the lens hood.

And of course there's always the real noob answer 3) it looks cool lol.

The two types of lens hoods I know of are the petal and non-petal.

Whenever I'm shooting, even if it's indoors, I always have my hood on. Just in case

Don't forget that it also makes the lens look bigger, and bigger=better (Oh grow up guys!!!!)

but seriously, if you are going to be looking into lens hoods (which is 100% recommended), make sure you get the dedicated one for your lens. if the size of the hood isn't perfectly calculated for the specific lens, there could be some problems such as vignetting. Stay away from the off-brand, one-size-fits-all ones (Usually the ones that screw onto the filter thread instead of the actual lens)
