I got a bunch of Gels off Ebay a little while ago. They're basically rectangular strips a bit like sweet wrappers.
To use them, I jammed them under the tupperware diffuser on my SB-800, but this seems a bit random. Is there a better way to use these? I know that you can buy gels for the SB-800 that are the "correct shape" but they're 3 times the price, which seems a bit harsh for a few minutes with the scissors..

I use a Demb Filter Holder. I put a speed strap on my flash head, and this velcros right to it. I hate the idea of gluing anything directly to my flash. It's super easy to put on and off, and changing gels is super fast.
On a side note, be careful with putting the gels directly on your flash head. I don't know what kind of gels you bought, but the ones I have (rosco swatchbook) melted really easily . The Demb filter holder has a double layer of clear plastic between to flash head and the filter to block some of the heat. If you're a DIY kind of guy, I've seen a filter holder made from a plastic paper protector. |

Not the fastest or most convenient, but this and a speedstrap works for me. Haven't melted a gel, yet.
