I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction for where to buy an infrared filter for the Canon G12? The link below is the only tutorial that I could find, but I am not sure where to purchase the filter.

I have seen filter that seem like they just screw right on to the lens, is that the case, or is there more to it? |

The usual filter for infrared is the Hoya R72: it comes in all the standard sizes. So, when you get an adapter ring to attach the filter to your G12, you need the size that the tube uses (usually 58mm). lensmateonline.com has some for ~$45.
And yes, it's both as simple and complex as screwing an IR filter to the front of your camera. The problem is that your sensor has an IR blocker over it, so that visual light colors aren't thrown off by the sensor's sensitivity to IR, and these blockers seem to get more and more efficient with each generation. So, between the IR pass on the front, and the IR blocker on the back, you're getting only a tiny amount of light. And the only way to gather more is to do long exposures. And 15 seconds is the maximum the G12 can do. But you'll definitely be needing a tripod and a non-moving subject. This is an IR photograph I took with a lenmate, a 58mm Hoya R72, and a G9 with a small plastic tripod: ![]() Canon Powershot G9, @7.4mm, iso 100, f/5, 10s. Hoya R72. Ultrapod. Timer.
