Default Which lens

I am buying a Nikon D3100 with the standard 18-55mm lens. I wanted to get a zoom lens and was wondering which would be better. The Nikon 55-200mm or Nikon 55-300mm.

Thank you for your input.

I have a Canon 450d, so I can't comment on that specific lens. But I do know that with most lenses, the greater the focal range, the softer the lens tends to be. Maybe somebody can confirm or deny that with these specific ones

I have no experience with the 55-300mm, but I have a Nikon AF-S VR 55-200 and I love it. You can get it new for a little over $200, or refurbished/used for closer to $150; whereas the 55-300 is going to be around $400 new. The question you have to think about is how much you want that extra 100mm, and what kind of photography you are shooting.

55-200mm VR (~$125 USD on craigslist), or save up for the 70-300mm VR ($350 used) if you absolutely need 300mm.

70-300mm VR is better than 55-300mm VR.

PS what do you want it for? Sports? Will you be shooting in low-light?
