Default Filter advice please

I've just bought a Nikon D90 and am getting less detail in the photos than I was from my old D40!! I used a Hoya filter on the D40 but bought a jessops filter with the camera, could this be why? I'm reluctant to try the camera outside without a filter to protect the lens but don't want to go the expense of a £50 filter if actually it's the camera that's somehow at fault.

I know that Hoya filters are the best, but are jessops ones SO much worse??

Inquiring minds want to know. It's not the first time this was asked.

LensRentals.com - Good Times with Bad Filters

http://www.lenstip.com/113.4-article...d_summary.html

It's not so much that you want the expensive ones vs. the cheap ones, but you do want a good multicoated one, and anything under $40 is likely not to be worth it for the increased chances you'll have of flare and haze.

Also, whether or not they're good for physical protection is another debate. Is it worth going through $200 worth of filters if you can just have the front element of the lens replaced for that much?

I use UV filters to protect my front element coatings, and because I have a bad habit of dusting off the front of my lens with a shirt tail and not remembering where I put my front lens caps. Because I trash the coatings on my lenses on a regular basis, I go for mid-range Hoyas; not B+Ws or Heliopans. Your usage may vary.

Chucked the Jessops filter today.... was getting too many reflections. However, photo quality not much better so am emailing Nikon to find out what's up.

Youre probably getting worked up over nothing, and it's likely not the filter's fault. Post some samples of the same shot with both the D40 and D90 and then we'll see what the issue is.

Are you shooting jpeg or raw? If jpeg it might be a setting in the camera.
