Question Quantaray Filters

I've been going through the archived articles and the fora, and I've seen lots of stuff about filters. Beyond the lens protection argument, I never really thought about filters all that much. I got them in my film days and haven't looked back. All my filters are Quantaray, and IIRC, they were all inexpensive.

Now, as I'm reading the old articles and comments and new posts, I am constantly reading about Hoya, Tiffen, and B+W filters, and how ignorant, irresponsible, or willfully stupid it is to buy anything less. Also, these seem to cost ~$100.

I saw this thread on photo.net and the last poster kind of echoed my thoughts. Is the whole brand name filter argument just equipment snobbery, or do they have a case? Is there documentation somewhere that shows side by side images with "crappy" off-brand filters and their much more expensive counterparts?

Anyone? If nobody can back up a reason for purchasing $100 filters, I guess I'll stick with the inexpensive ones.
