Default New beginner!

Hi

I have recently purchased a Nikon D3100 which comes with the standard 'View NX' software. I am new to the DSLR world of cameras and whilst I do not want to run before I can walk I would like your views on what photo editing software is decent. Suggestions gratefully accepted!

i have heard some good things about the nikon program and you can upgrade but have never used it myself if you are after free there are a few around. Gimp is one of the best does much of what photoshop will do. Picnik from flickr has some interesting effects but if you want the basics like clone tool, levels ect you have to upgrade for a small fee. Picasa is another one very simple more presets but it is great if you like collages.

Cheers Jo

Lightroom is probably the best photography software out there in my eyes. It takes all the stuff out of PS that photographers NEED and puts it into it's own software that also has cataloging abilities.

Check out the free trial. As in, from adobe.com, not whatever 3baypirate is suggesting.

I'm a big fan of Lightroom as well. It's a very nice software specifically designed for photographers. It's basically a database that will save all your adjustments and will apply them once you export your pictures. It never touches the original file and to me THAT was a seller (especially if you shoot in RAW).

PS "new beginner"?
Is there a "used beginner" or an "old beginner"..well, I guess that 2nd one could be.

+for GIMP.
I actuly own CS5 from a class I helped teach. But I still use gimp for 90% of my edits. Too me its faster and easier to work with for more basic stuff, (you can't beat PS for content aware and some other stuff though)

For oaginizing, try picasa.

If your interested in trying shooting RAW (you should ) try ufraw.

If you end up with gimp. Feel free to PM me. As (with all modesty) I'm pretty good.
