Default Wide angle lenses for Canon EF mount?

I'm looking to buy a wide angle for my next lens. I think I prefer prime lenses, but I'm open to ideas. I only recently started my research, so any help is appreciated.

I have a few criteria that I'm setting: no fisheye lenses, under $1000, something fast (f/2.8 or wider), and sharp.

So far, I have four potential lenses on my list:
  • Canon 28mm f/1.8
  • Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
  • Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8
  • Sigma 20mm f/1.8

Any thoughts on these? Any other recommendations?

I'm not really sure what length I want yet... although for my crop-sensor Canon XSi (450D), I really liked using the Canon 10-22mm lens a lot. I usually liked putting it as wide as possible (closer to 10mm).

This lens would be for a Canon 5D2, so EF mounts only.

Thanks!

The Tokina 11-16 is designed for a crop body--it'll vignette on a full-frame at anything other than 16mm.

To my eyes, the Sigma 20/1.8 just looks... odd with a bokeh that's a little harsh for my tastes. Great for environmental/funky portraits, but not so much for landscape work.

Personally, I think it's a waste of time to get an ultrawide for a full frame only to use it on a crop body. It won't be an ultrawide, then. It's only when you're on a crop body that you can get a great fast ultrawide like the 11-16 for about $600-$800 dollars. When you hit full frame, the cost for a good fast ultrawide is going to increase like hell. What you probably want on 5dii is an EF 16-35 f/2.8L USM. But you might settle for an EF 17-40 f/4L USM.

Your only other Canon choices are probably the 14/2.8L II, and TS-E 17.

There's also the Zeiss ZEs 21mm and 18mm, and the ultra-cheap Samyang/Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 (with wave distortion), but these are manual focus only.

And there's the Sigma 12-24, which is full-frame, even at 12mm, but it's slow and the image quality isn't the greatest.

Full frame ultrawides are few and far between and pretty damn expensive.

Consider saving a bit more and getting the 24mm f/1.4 lens. It was the first L lens I purchased and still may be my favorite lens.
