What lenses do you have? Just starting out, I would get some extension tubes. Thats what I use and I got them for $9.99 off amazon. That way you can see if you like macro before you blow $500 on a lens.

Extension tubes can be a great way to start seeing you already have a 50mm lenses, but they can be limiting, great for still objects but if your after bugs ect having to get so close can be challenging. With some of the cheaper tubes you may loose all or some of your auto features, the better brands like kenko you wont.
If you want to go for a macro lense have a look at the tamron SP 90mm f2.8, luv mine good focal length and makes a great potraite lense as well and wont break the bank.

You are also loosing the 1:1 ratio on your sensor with tubes, which is moslty why people are buying a dedicated macro lens.

The biggest problem with extension tubes in my experience was the loss of a full stop of light.
The good news about dedicated Macro lenses is that the 3rd party brands have just as good image quality as the first party, however with one large caveat. The Sigma 105 and Tamron 90 macro lenses front barrel turns during focus, this can cause skitish insects to fly away or worse get stung by a more aggressive insect like a bee. If you have the cash buy the Nikon 105mm f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S VR Micro or perhaps the new Sigma 150 f/2.8 Macro with OS if you want a bit more distance between you and your subject. |
