Do you have the 18-55 kit lens? Or a point and shoot digital camera? If you do, and you've taken a lot of shots with it, I'd recommend using an EXIF analysis tool, like ExposurePlot or Photostats to see which focal length (or its P&S equivalent) you use more.

The average focal length for most of the pictures I take with it is around 30mm give or take a few mm. I think if I had the 35mm f1.8 AF-S lens it would get a lot of action. In my world a 50mm AF-S lens would still not get used by me very often. The shorter focal length is more versatile. I have the 50mm AF lens. I don't use it much. Partially because it won't auto-focus with the D3100. Partially because in most situations the kit lens does just fine for me and it's not worth the hassle to change lenses. I change back and forth from the kit lens and the 55-200mm lens enough as it is. FWIW I like the kit lens. It performs way above it's price range. It's light, sharp, reasonably fast and cheap enough to keep a spare or two around just in case of an accident.

My friend shoots Nikon and he has the D7000 with 35mm f1.8 AF-S lens and he is very happy with that combination, seems to work well for his style of shooting.
