Default Tripods for HDSLR Filming?

I have zero knowledge on the right tripods for videography, but I've heard some say ball heads are best for proper panning motions. Any recommendations would be strongly appreciated!

I could never ever imagine panning ( almost impossible to do it smoothly and accurately?) with a ball head (and I use one for still photography) however I have used a 3 way head when I was shooting movies.

I can't recommend one as I have not done any movie work for years.

A "fluid" 3 way pan/tilt head would be the better/normal choice.
If you want to spend a lot, then maybe a gimbal head would work well....but I've never seen one used for video.
You DON'T want a ball head....

Agreed on the fluid pan/tilt. A Manfrotto 501 or 701 would probably work pretty well. What kind of sticks are we talking here?

right now any that would be best for panning motions for a Canon T2i/550D camera body

Well panning has nothing to do with the sticks really ... that's all in the head.

If you are talking still photography and panning you may find this thread of assistance - even though it is biased towards motor sport, and these panning shots I am always shooting hand held as it makes it easier to track the subject through the viewfinder.

Panning: Motor sport

do you recommend any sticks with a ball/fluid head?

Thanks RichardTaylor for the reference on panning with still photography, but I was talking about video recording, but I still would love to try some still photography panning.

They're two separate parts, though many stores sell them bundled. Just don't buy a ball head.

Something like this would be a good basic setup: Manfrotto 190XB 3-Section Tripod with 501HDV Head B&H Photo

could I attach a manfrotto ball head to any manfrotto tripid legs?

I was browsing on B&H and noticed a David and Sanford - Provista 7518 Tripod w/FM18 Head

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...od_w_FM18.html

And yes I know manfrotto is best and better long term invests, but the reviews and price for the Davis and Sanford is right now beating Manfrotto on B&H. I may still get the one you've recommended depending how patient I am ;P
