Default I hate when that happens...

It looks as if my "long" lens has died. It is was used when I purchased it a couple of years ago and I doubt is worth the cost of repair (if possible). Looking for suggestions on comparable replacement.

It was a Canon EF 75-300 f4-45.6 IS USM. Not a great lens, I know, but it was what I could afford. The problem now is replacing it within my "budget" (and I use that term loosely) of $500 USD. I am looking into refurbished Canons but if anyone has a suggestion on another brand, I would appreciate the input.

I was hoping to upgrade my body (XSi) but replacing this lens is now the priority.

TIA

If you buy another cheap lens, you'll ultimately replace that one or decide to upgrade. Wouldn't it make more sense to do without for a little while and then buy a good one? Buy the best and cry once.

I agree.. The difference in image quality on a decent lens will make the wait worth while.. Something like the 70-200 2.8 is jawdroppingly sharp! (As good as any primes!) But that's a Nikon, although you could probably get an old push/pull and a canon adaptor for not much more than your budget.

Would you also say that it's groin-grabbingly sharp?

Thank you, Lori. That is actually the one at which I was looking. I thought I had heard good things about it but the link you sent confirmed that at least it SHOULDN'T be a dog of a lens.
