Default sharp zoom lens under $1000

For a nikon user whats a good zoom lens with a $1000 budget? I recently got a 50mm prime ,I'm very happy with it's sharpness but I cant capture those stolen moment shots from people anymore.

Thanks in advance

What body are you using, what zoom range are you looking for, and are you willing to get 3rd party lenses?

If you have an AF motor in your body, you can get the 80-200 f.8 for $500 to $1000 depending on push pull vs 2 ring and condition.

New or used? Sharp or fast, or both? The 70-300VR is a good sharp realatively long lens but it is not fast but only costs around $500. The 28-300VR is perhaps even sharper but will run you about $800 used. If you want to stretch a little you might be able to find a 70-200 f/2.8 AF-S VR-1 for about $1250 and it is a killer lens.

Scooter >Currenty Im using D60 body. sounds complicated for me

Os> yes im open for 3rd party glass.

kirb > 70-200 would it let me take a shot at close range also??

I love street photography and taking pictures candid peoples reactions ( wtf am i making sense?) sharp, fast and zoom what im hoping for. I felt that i made the wrong choice in getting the 50mm f1.4G afs.

Thank you guys

D60 does not have a focus motor.... so my suggestion is out.

200mm to 300mm is a decent length for what you are looking at. Unless you are doing alot of shooting at night, the 70-300 AF-s VR would be a good choice.. If you are shooting in lower light, then you would need to find a use 70-200 f2.8 AF-S VR

Scooter> Thanks for the tip man. Yeah I would like to shoot in low light conditions. I appreciate the advice.

Cheers
