Default Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM OR Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM

Hi All,
i'm looking to pick up a prime lens for my 50D. something that will give me close to the standard lens on my crop sensor.

i've read a few reviews online, but was just wondering if any of you have experience with any of these lenses.

Cheers
Roy

I have th Sigma, and I love it. I was just using it 5 mins ago.

If you look at MTF charts and the like, wide open in the corners the Canon is better. In real life you will not notice. The Sigma makes up for this with the best bokeh I have ever seen, and the extra 2/3 of a stop. The AF is also pretty quick.

Last thing. Learn how to use AF microadjust on the 50D. Your copy of the lens will probily ether front or back-focus.

Last-last thing, it did not make sense for me as I'm a landscape photographer and don't use this lens much. But you should think about the Canon 35mm f/1.4L That's a great lens.

That's my $0.02

Thanks ishootraw

the main reasons i want the 28/30mm prime is because of the standard FOV and weight (lighter than my EF-S 17-55 f/2.8). these factors and the cost of the 35L, rule it out for me.

I have just been reading up about AF microadjust, so i will be sure to adjust if i purchase the sigma. in fact, i should probably check my other lenses too.

No Problem.

If you don't have obvious problems, I would not suggest going and messing with AF MA. Its a tool to be used sparingly. You may well just end up doing more bad then good. Canon lenses are tack on 99.99% of the time when they leave the factory.
