Default Lense to recommend

hi everybody,
need your advise.
i have 11-16 and 80-200 lense, now im thinkin to get a lense to fill the gap.
my first obvious choice is 24-70 f/2.8 but it's just too pricy for me. had a peek on 24-85 f/3.5-4.5 but not quite so sure about it.

can somebody help me please.

thank u.

I'm gonna assume we're talking Nikon here.

Nikon also make a 24-85 f/2.8-4 which is considerably better. That being said, based on your current kit i'd say a 16-85 VR would be best. it's slower (f/3.5-5.6) but it fits perfectly.

yes youre rite, we're talkin nikon .. sorry forgot to mention it.
i agree, the 16-85 range wise would fit, but im not liking the small aperture.
now im considering 17-55, and sacrificing the gap between 55-80.
can someone give inputs regarding this?
thanks.

If that's the case, I'd actually be tempted to go 24-70 f/2.8. Personal preferences, really. The only problem is you'd be missing out on the 16-24 range, which is 24-35, which is kinda important.

Well, if the 55 is not long enough, you step closer.... if the 80 is too long you step back....

Not really an important focal range, depending on what you are doing. Most of my stuff is really wide like landscapes, 35-50mm (indoor candids & portraits) or 80 plus, being outdoor portraits & birds etc. My little studio is only 20 feet long though, so with 7 feet between background & subject and 10 feet or so from subject to camera, full length is around 35mm and head & shoulder is 50mm.

thanks scott, i guess ure rite, it depends on your necessities..but sometimes u just cant step closer or further from ur objects for so many reasons
but anyway, with the 17-55, im most certain that i'll be spending most of the time on the longer side of its range, 35-55 maybe. so i need to find out its performance at this range.

anybody has info on this?

thanks

Here is one review....

Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 G IF-ED DX - Review / Test Report

If you google it, they will come.......

Seriously, tons of reading out there.

I would also download an exif analyzer and find out at what focal length you are normally shooting. I know it has been an eye opener for me, and has helped me in making some decisions.

thanks a lot, appreciate your input
so many readings out there, it'd be nice if you can go straight to trusted ones

btw, further readings and surfing and being open to ideas, got me to consider a prime lens...nikkor 35/1.8 that is
how is it really the image quality of a prime lense compare to zoom?
most people say prime lense offers better image, where some other say that zoom lense gives image just as good

i do have a prime, the 50/1.8 .. and i love it very much

a 35mm would be a great option and maybe even add a 20mm or 24mm later if you feel you are still missing a bit. The price of AF-S primes can be pretty high, have a look at the slightly older AF- D lenses still great lenses at about 1/3 the price of the AF-S. Have added a nikon page that shows all of there lenses great quick reference page.

Nikon | Imaging Products | NIKKOR Lenses

Cheers Jo
