I'm not sure why they're saying the list price for the 55-250mm is $400, but it's still gone down about $20 since I last checked. I got mine back when it was still around $250.

On to the lens itself. Professional photographers say it's a crappy lens. But if you're just doing amateur work, then it's great. I use my 55-250 to shoot at the local drag strip in low light conditions, and I still get pretty good shots.

I'll post a shot taken with my 55-250mm below. Personally, I like to see images taken by the lenses I'm looking at buying. I don't own the 300mm, but I have heard decent things about it.

It was anything against your post. It's just amazon lol. They always say the list price is something outrageous when it's nowhere near that high lol. And it's overall a pretty decent lens IMHO. But in one post i read, photographers that have had the chance to use and be spoiled by L lenses called it a paperweight lol.

In my personal experiences though, it's overall a good beginners lens. It's part of the "beginner's trifecta" as I've heard it described. The standard 18-55mm kit lens being 1st, then the 55-250mm lens, followed by the 50mm f/1.8 prime lens.

How many times am I going to put out advice about this lens

Ok first what do you shoot? What is you curent set-up? Without that I can't really br of much help. but here it goes.

Ok first thing, to remember. Lenses are an investment, good lenses you will keep for a long time. On the other side of the coin, its not all about the lens, Ansel Adams shot with lenses that would be considered soft and crappy by today's standards.

The 55-250, don't have it, know people who Did. But again refer above. It is a newer lens design then the 70-300.

The 70-300, I have it setting around somewhere.(i now have the new 70-300 IS) you get a extra 50 on the long end, and(for a crop body this may be a problem) lose 20 on the wide end. Mind you that that optic design is like 15 years old. Of corse the fact that Canon has been using it that long does say something.

On last thing to think about, Tamron makes a nice 70-300 too. And from what i've heard, it's sharper then the Canon

Sry for the long post. That's my $0.02

Well, they're kit lenses, and you can always do better. But, it depends on your budget and needs. They are decent lenses and they will generate great photos, but if you can step it up and afford better lenses, go for it.
