Default Camera case for bicycling?

Can anyone recommend a camera case for a Nikon D-300 with a 50mm lens that can be used while bicycling? I keep missing great shots because I don't have the camera with me. I'm afraid if I tumble the camera will be severely damaged. I've looked at some holster type cases but I don't see where they offer much protection.

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

How about a backpack? That might be the easiest to find in a variety of sizes.

Actually, David, I have a backpack camera bag but I ride a recumbent bicycle and the seat is kind of like a beach chair so wearing a backpack is prohibitive but thanks for the suggestion.

Is there anywhere you could strap on something like a Lowepro TLZ? I bought one of those to use while backpacking specifically because it's got attachment points on the top and bottom so I can strap it to my chest. Nice compact bag, and it's available w/ a weather cover (used it last weekend).

Default Bag for camera on Bike.

How about a sadlebag which could protect camera if falling esp as you could put padding around it.

I like the TLZ but it doesn't have any padding built into it but it is most likely the way I will go if nothing else turns up. Thanks again for the help.

Yes, I'm looking at that type of option, thanks.

FWIW, my TLZ is padded. I believe they've got a handful of different models, though, so maybe you saw a different case.

I'm going down to my LCS today to see what they have to offer and I will be looking mainly at the TLZ series. Thanks again for the help.

This is something I've been thinking about too, however, I don't want my camera in a backpack or saddlebag because it needs to be very handy. I often pass something on my bike and think I could do a quick "drive-by" if my camera were at hand. I often keep my 50D around my neck and one arm (diagonally across my chest) while riding but it's not the best scenario. I was thinking instead of getting a handlebar basket, something with a lid, that I could just nestle my camera into and then it would be in front of me and easily accessible. In that case, it would be a bike store, not a camera store I would go to.
In a recumbent bike, there are no handlebars I believe, but your saddlebags are more accessible yes?
