Filter question

Can anyone explain the difference between an FLW magenta filter and a plain or standard magenta filter?

I came across a tutorial video that uses what was referred to as an FLW filter, but I can't seem to find any info about how they differ.

My first issue: why a magenta filter? They were used in the film days to balance green light: theyre useless now.

An FLW magenta is a warm tube filter - which is better matched to what most flourescent tubes produce - to deal with balancing flourescent light. So it is better matched to balancing flourescent than a traditional magenta filter - which simply pulls out magenta. (there are also FLD magenta filters - which are for balancing the daylight flourescent bulbs)

If you need a magenta filter for the purpose of minus green (or to give you a magenta color cast)- then you'd probably simply want a magenta filter. FLW vs regular magenta is dependent on why you need the filter.

Osmosis - they are certainly still useful now. - One reason to use a magenta filter - is to reduce the amount of green in your green channel. This, can let you get better exposure in your blue and red channels - bringing the three closer together for a more balanced color.

It's used often with unity white balance to get a more accurate RAW histogram and results with less noise - especially in the blues...
