Default Canon 100mm macro w/ or without IS?

I have the Canon 60D and just ordered the 100mm macro lens without IS. Now I am not sure anymore if that was a good choice. I am a beginner and a very 'advanced' photographer friend told me that you don't need IS when you know what you're doing. Since I want to know SOON what I'm doing, I wonder if it was the right thing to save the $400-500. I have not received the package yet, so I could return it without even opening. I have no particular plan as to how to use the lens as far as light, or environment, or with or without tripod etc, since I want to do it all eventually. Thanks a bunch!!!

I love love love my Canon 100mm f/2.8L. Here's perhaps one of the best comparisons you'll find: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro Lens Review.

Here's an excerpt:
Quote:
I called the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens Canon's "Most fun per dollar lens". While that lens is less expensive, I'm thinking the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 L IS USM Macro Lens may be the new holder of this title. The improvements in this lens, especially the Hybrid IS, go a long way toward increasing the fun-ness. And the results are definitely fun-inducing. This is a highly recommended lens.
