Unhappy Master and slave flashes

Hi I'm new to dslr photography and i was looking at a Nissin DI622 mk2 flash.. its was said that it works as a slave, not master.. what does it mean? can it still trigger other flashes and can it be used as a normal add on flash to a hotshoe of a camera? thanks..

No, it cannot master others unless they are used in manual with flash triggering. As in having the Nissin on camera and a triggerable slave off camera that will fire when it sees the Nissin fire. All settings on the flash as far as power and such will have to be set manually for each lighting situation.

I see.. thanks for your advice.. well i was thinking, if i have off shoe flashes for like studio and i have to set them manually, its not really a problem because the environment at that one spot doesnt change much right?

Yes you can. Just dont use a mode that causes your on camera flash to pre fire for exposure. Strictly manual.

Uh, Jim. The Nissin Di622 isn't an all-manual flash. It speaks iTTL. It can be used as a CLS slave, and its optical slave can be set to ignore a TTL pre-flash, so the mastering flash does NOT have to be in full Manual mode.

andriantam, you cannot use it as a CLS master, but as Jim states above, you can use it as a manual master, so long as your slave flashes have built in "dumb" optical slaves. If you need a CLS master, then look at the Di866.

If your camera does NOT have a CLS master in the pop-up, the optical slave in the Di622 can still be used to slave it to your pop-up flash. If your pop-up flash is in manual, use it in the SF mode. If your pop-up flash is in iTTL, use the SD mode (and it will ignore the iTTL "preflash").

The Di-622 can also be used on the hotshoe, much like a Nikon SB speedlight, with full iTLL capability. It does support rear-curtain sync, but DOES NOT support high-speed sync (FP mode).

Yes, you are quite correct. I am not as proficient outside of Nikon CLS. Sorry about the misinformation. I pulled the specs from the internet and did not do a thorough reading.
