Default 50mm vs 85mm

what is the general preference for shooting portraits the 50mm or the 85mm?? why??

I believe they're popular amongst many because of the wide apertures they're available in, allowing for a shallow DoF. Primes are also generally sharper than zooms. The 85 allows for the photographer not to get uncomfortably close to the subject and still fill the frame, if thats what they choose to do.

85 is a better portrait lens as you are not in their face and you get more compression. People "like" 50mm because they are cheap.

Are you shooting full-frame or cropped sensor? A 50mm lens on a cropped sensor camera is pretty close to the same field of view you'd get w/ an 85mm lens on a full-frame camera.

right now im shooting a canon xs..in the next year or so i will upgrade to 7d
