Depends on what effect I want.

For my black and white film, I use a deep red filter to accentuate contrast in the sky. For Digital, though, it's usually heavy Neutral Density filters for long-shutter speeds.

A circular polarizer (which everyone should own) and a Lee graduated 2 stop ND filter.

whatever filter you choose to buy, do NOT get cheap filters...

interesting post on cheap filters

accompanying forum discussion

i've heard 50/50 accounts of whether a UV filter is needed, and if a NC filter is better since UV filters may create a color cast (...?) on the image. what do you guys think?

Only one of my lenses has a (very high quality) UV filter on it at all times, and that's because the front element is large and protrudes slightly (enough that it fits behind a filter) and I was afraid of scratching it with the lens cap. Other than that, none of my lenses use NC, UV, 1A or any other type of "protection" filter,

A lot of folks here on DPS recommend a lens hood instead of a UV filter. I don't use one because I'm always holding my ND grad in front of my lens.
