Default Travel light with 1 lens

Hey,

I have been reading some post about travelling and not taking being able to take a lot of equipment.

But what do you do if you only want to take one lens? Me personally for instance was thinking about getting an 18-200mm lens. And for all those who want to share with me that those are slow lenses and give low quality please don't cuz you have already done that all over the net. However I would love to know what do you take? If all you bring is your camera, a holster of thinkthank and ONE lens...?

Regards,

Mich

Pretty much the only choice if you want one do all lens.... Lets face it, that and a speedlight and you are not in too bad of a shape for shooting in most locations. I have done a vacation with the 18-200 and did not find that I lost out on not having several lenses. Sure, I could have been more creative with a wider aperture etc, but for a do all lens, it is not only the only choice, but not a bad one either.

Which one would you recommend than for my canon 600D. I think I can much easier find some room for my 50mm 1.8f lens than for my speedlite for my indoor shooting. So I guess my question should be which 18-200mm lens do I take.

Another option is the 28-300, not quite as wide but much longer - really depends on what you are shooting. The Nikon 28-300VR is much sharper than the 18-200VR (more expensive to).

Canon EF-S 18-200m f/3.5-5.6 IS EF-s seems to be be pretty good, except for the ring turning on auto focus.

any significant reason not to go for the SIGMA DC 18-200MM F/3.5-6.3 OS CANON apart from the smaller aperture at 200mm and use the money I save on a filter?

In my experience with Nikon, the Sigma lenses are just not as sharp or contrasty. I have bought and sold 4 Sigma & 3 Tamrons, just not be happy with any of them. I have not tried Sigma in the 18-200, but I did try a Tamron & got rid of it 24 hours later. In Sigma, I had the 24-70 f2.8 & 70-200 f2.8, so both "pro" glass and while they were good, I was happier with images from a Nikon kit lens when comparing them at the same aperture. Got rid of them, and now I am firmly in the OEM camp.

Agreed. I had a Sigma 24-70 and was not happy with the IQ, got a Nikon 24-70 and love it. Had a Tamron 200-500 and got rid of it, IQ was poor. Got a Tamron 28-300VC, loved the range but the IQ left me wanting so I sold it and got a Nikon 28-300VR that I love. The only two non OEM lenses I like and still have are a Sigma 12-24 which is very sharp and a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which is good also.

I can't help but feel like I'm waisting money since this lens doesn't add anything but travel advantage. (2 of my other lenses are standard zoom lenses as well (Canon EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS II & Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS)) Would you recommend me to still use these if I shoot on location or would I be better off by selling one or even both?

Just take the fifty.

Don't want to sound like some troll but really. I'd take my fifty and be happy with it. Maybe if I had something like 24-70 f/2.8 L then that. Maybe.

I don't know what it is but the fixed focal length kinda forces you to be a better photographer.

If you know you'll be in some really tight spaces then take some wider lens too but yeah. 50.
