Default Adorama Equipment Buying Program?

Has anyone used Adorama to tell their old equipment?

I've got an XSi kit and a brand new Canon 55-250mm lens I want to sell. I was wondering if that was a good route to go.

I tried the process last year to sell the 55-250mm to Adorama and never received the mailing label (or a response when I inquired where it was), which has kind of made me uneasy but I'm willing to give it another try if other's have had a good experience.

Thanks!

I've never tried selling my equipment to them but have you tried KEH?

I wonder how their prices compare to Adorama. KEH only wants to give $50 for the 55-250mm and that's in pristine condition. I've literally taken maybe 15 shots with it. Maybe I'll have to try ebay.

In my experience you're better off selling the gear yourself, than trying to sell it to one of the used dealers. What they pay for used equipment is usually a third of what they sell it for, if that.

I'm really sorry that you were not served well in the past and I do understand your concerns.
If you'd like to drop me an email: Helen@adorama.com, detailing the items you have for sale, I will ensure that it is dealt with promptly.

Thumbs down Stary Away From Adorama Buy Used Gear Program!!!

.
Do business with Adorama at your own risk!

I just used this program and they completely ripped me off.

I sent them a Canon Rebel XL ($325), Canon 17-85mm USM lens ($550+), Canon 100-400mm USM lens ($1600+), 2 Canon HV20 camcorders ($1100+ x2), all the cables, extra batteries, hdmi cables, cleaning kit, all sorts of accessories ($200), a Canon Gear Bag ($50) and a Lowe Pro backpack ($75+).
We're talking over $4000 retail worth of gear.

They quoted me $2100 if everything was in good condition, which my gear was kept in pristine condition. I was hesitant but I had a shoot coming up and didn't have time to sell it privately, so I accepted the offer and shipped them my gear

As soon as they received my gear the bulls#it started and I knew they were playing me...

First I started to get handed around through the usual lame a$$ process of this guy has to review this, then this guy has to do this, etc., etc. It's the same thing they do at used car lots...shuffle you around, wasting your time to make you feel rushed, then they start playing with your head about value and whether you "qualify."

Adorama did the same horse s#it here.

Next thing I knew I was being offer $1500 for my gear - thats $700 less than what they told me in the quote!

The guy said that I was only eligible to receive up to a max of 70% of my quote.
Well first off they never mentioned that ONCE during the process of getting my gear.

And I knew what was going on when this pushy hard lined jern got on the phone and started with all his "closing" tactics. Im a marketer by trade - I knew exactly what the hell he was doing.

But I was in a rush, I had a shoot that week and they had already wasted 5 days with their lame "processing." They wouldn't even cut me a break after I offered to order everything I needed from them! Which their prices were at least 10%+ more than Amazon.

They had my gear and was in a pinch, so I took the money and had to cut my planned purchase by $700.

Did they break the law?... No.
Do I think it's a scam? ... Hell Yes!

I WILL NEVER do business with them again and I will make it a personal mission to steer as many people away from them as I can. I HATE businesses that pray on consumers like this using these tactics.

Although I invited you to contact me via dpchallenge where you posted this same review, you did not do so.

Nevertheless, we managed to ID your transaction - even though this took place over a month ago.

You were indeed quoted $2,100 expected re-sale value, and listening to the recording of the call, the rep DID in fact advise that we pay up to 70% of the expected re-sale value. This is to cover our costs such as advertising, storage, cleaning, staff etc etc - and the boss expects us to turn a profit.......

We also need to allow for the costs involved for us as we paid the shipping into Adorama to be able to evaluate your equipment - and if you had advised us that you were unhappy with the quote we would also have shipped it back to you, fully insured, at no additional cost to you.
We also offer all our used equipment purchasers a 90-day warranty which includes a 30-day returns period. The cost of this has to be factored in to the amount at which we are able to purchase equipment..

70% of $2,100 is $1,470, however, you were sent a check for $1,500.

We would gladly return the unit to you, however it has already been sold; not for $2,100, but for $2,000 straight.

Nevertheless, we sent you an additional check in the sum of $600 therefore Adorama has made a loss on this transaction.

Had you called us up right away and spoken to our used department team manager this matter could have been addressed immediately, and the process explained to you once more, however, you did not.

Make sure you pay attention to the terms of the sale very closely. I know someone that was surprised in a very similar way to the wording of this deal. The "quote" he received turned out to be a "resale value quote" as Helen indicates above -- not the value Adorama was prepared to give him for the equipment. This is a bright guy, mind you, and he was completely blind-sided after he sent his stuff in when he found out that the price he'd been talking about wasn't the money Adorama was prepared to shell out for his equipment. Incidentally, he used very similar language when talking about the deal -- "they quoted me $x", for instance, where "x" turned out not to be the money they were offering.

Helen, given all the other things that Adorama does very well, it seems that this is an area where you're earning some black eyes. Is it possible that you could review the language you guys are using when talking to prospective customers about resale? Whether it's your intent or not, it really seems to be confusing people.

Laura, if you know what you're really going to get for your equipment, Adorama is going to be easier and more reliable than ebay or a local sale, but you'll probably get more selling it yourself if you're willing to deal with that hassle. You should have a decent shot at getting $150-175 for that lens.

You sound like a typical asshat who doesn't pay attention to the details. Everything is someone elses fault. Sounds like Adorama did everything right and even squared it up with you above and beyond.
