(Note to mods: Wasn't sure if this should've been in the gear section or not since it's less about camera gear specifically and more about finding a small plastic box, but if you think it's better-suited there, feel free to move it.)
![]() So I bought a CD Flight Case for $50, pulled out the dividers, got some high-density cut for it, and cut out holes for my camera and lenses. The upper-right corner is for storage, and that's the issue I'm facing now: what to use. I'm figuring the simplest thing would be small black plastic boxes, internally partitioned off so I can use them to hold memory cards, batteries, cables, card readers, flash gels, and all the other little bits & bobs that we use in our day-to-day. But where to get them? What are they called? I've tried scouring Container Store and Amazon (among others) but without a solid lead on what search terms to use, it's been difficult. I've tried looking up etuis, pill boxes, screw boxes, you name it. I bought some Plano fishing utility boxes but they turned out to be a bust. So far no dice elsewhere. Ideally it'll be about 1.5" deep, Width and Height are negotiable. Anyone know what I can/should be looking for? Likewise, any suggestions on other things I could put up there to help with storage? I was thinking a mesh pocket, but I might get more mileage out of a partitioned box. Thoughts? |

Are you looking for something like this: McMaster-Carr
"Divided box" or "craft box" will probably find you other resources. Chances are pretty good you could find something like this at a Michael's or Hobby Lobby craft store. |

Get the Thinktank's pixel pocket rocket holds 10 CF cards and only costs about $17.00.

These look perfect, but sadly they might be victim to the same problem I ran into with the Planos: the long dividers are fixed. So the individual compartments wouldn't be big enough to accommodate much of my stuff. I looked at the various adjustable boxes and even the most generous layout, Q, might not be big enough.
That said, thanks for the tip on searching for divided boxes and craft boxes. Hopefully that'll turn up more candidates. |

That said, thanks for the link. There are a few good ideas in there. Nothing I can really afford to spend on, but good DIY inspiration.

If you are looking for containers where you can customize the dividers, definitely check out craft stores, as mentioned above. I have about 15 different containers here that would do exactly what you want, but mine have beads, and brads, and eyelets and pieces of ribbon and stuff like that in them.

no internal dividers but solid, dust & waterproof: Otterboxes

I have a couple otters, but they wouldn't make very good internal storage for my flight case. The waterproofness is pointless in this context, and they're just way too bulky.
![]() I'm gonna hit up a Michael's Craft store but if I can't find anything, I may wind up just taking a dremel to one of the Planos and cutting it to spec. Seems to be my only real option thus far. |
