Default Mac reading a portable device

I just bought an iMac (literally last night) and when I hooked up my 40D to load images as I do on my PC, it didn't seem to be reading the device. Now, being the novice I am, I may totally be missing it, but I went to the Finder and expected to find it listed under devices, but it was not. I then plugged it into my PC to ensure the cable was working, which it was. I also plugged my external drive into the Mac to ensure the USB ports were working, which they are. So, could someone please direct me to where I might be able to find and access my camera on my Mac? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Pull the memory card out. Put it into a card reader

Ive never fiddled with the cables on my cameras. Ever. I dont see the point.

Thanks for the input. My 40D uses CF cards rather than SD and the computer doesn't have a reader for those. I was trying to avoid purchasing one but maybe I'll have to.

Did you open an app to import the photos into? iPhoto is probably the default if you don't have anything else installed.

You shouldn't have any trouble importing. I haven't had any trouble at all with my 50D. Do you have Canon Digital Photo Proffessional? If so you could install that (although there are issues with it and Snow Leopard) and try to import to that. Otherwise iPhoto should work fine.
