Hi, I'm interested in filters (2,3 stop ND filters and a polarizer) that can go on the kit 18-55 lens of my Canon XS.
I would like decent filters that don't screw on but rather "snap" on like the lens cap does. Is there anything like that available? If not, can you point me to decent screw-on filters - I suppose I can settle. Thanks! |

Doesn't exist.
Filters are either screw-on or big square-in-frame cinema types. B+W is generally the best, though Hoya is pretty good value.

Why on earth would you need snap-on filters? It takes 3 seconds to screw a new filter on.

I can agree with the other person about how I'd love ones that go on as easily as the lens cap but I don't think such would be as secure. Also for snap-on ones, I'm having a hard time seeing how such would even work very well. Either there'd be a piece that'd block the lens view itself by sticking into the ring or it'd poke outside the ring and be something that could snag, break off, etc. Screw-on does make the most sense, engineering-wise.

Lens caps were always designed as snap in. Filters were not. A lens cap is something you put on your lens (or remove from it) hundreds, thousands, etc of times. Not so for a filter.

There were several filter manufacturers making magnetic filters at one time. I think Cokin is the only one left. Here is one of their products. Cokin S154MM Magnetic NDX8 (M) Magnetic Filter There was one manufacturer than came out back in the mid '80s. The made a series of magnetic filters that stacked on a steel adapter ring. Much like the Hoyarex, Lee, and Cokin filter system. But instead of square filters that slid into a plastic holder, they were round filters that magnetically stuck to each other. I can't remember the company's name. I never bought any.
