Default I would love an opinion off a photographer ! Re: My Kit

Hi Everyone !

Im looking @ upgrading my entry level Canon 1000D & 75-300mm standard set up.

Before I start , i am on a total budget of approx $6000 for the kit.

Proposed new kit (75% Sport / 25% Social use)

Canon 7D (fastest FPS rate i could find without spending too much $$$)
Canon 100-400mm L series f4.5-5.8 (main lens for daytime Rugby League action shots)
Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 (Stabilised version)(for lower light & night games)
Sigma 17-70mm 2.8 DC OS (Stabilized version) (for general use .Parties/Portraits etc etc)
Canon 430EX 11 Speedlight (to go with 17-70mm)
Canon 2x Extender ( a little toy to have a little fun with, not for Sports etc)

I would appreciation ANY comments/opinions etc before i make any commitment to the above proposed purchase.

Thanks Heaps

Wayne

Skip the TC (your 70-200 f/2.8 + 2.0TC gives you 400/5.6, or the same as your 100-400).
Get the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS instead of the Sigma with the extra money
Do you really need a speedlight for the work you're doing?

Looks like you're buying all new kit.. So maybe you could think beyond Canon?

Sony A55 does 10FPS, easily beats the 7D hands down and will cost you less.. On the long lens in lower lights it'll win too, the lack of mirror means less vibration, meaning you can snap away without having to wait for vibrations to die down, and the Live view works as well.

Lenses are cheaper too.

Only down side for me was the lack of Sony/Minolta users here in Switzerland meant I couldn't find kit particularly easily, so I jumped ship.. But the camera is good.

In what sense? The 7D has amazing image quality and high-iso characteristics. The A55 while good, isn't as good.

The case for staying with Canon is an easy on: familiarity. The Canon and Sony systems are VERY VERY different. The cost of lenses isnt as different as one might imagine, and Canon is easier to find in the vast majority of the world.

If anything I'd say go for the 60D to save some money

Ah... Appologies.. I was getting mixed up with the 60D.

There's always a case for familiarity, but people adapt quickly. Sonys and Canons seem to have far more in common with each other than Nikons, which seem to have gone out of their way to do everything the other way around.

The lenses I bought for my Sony were about 10% cheaper than my Nikon lenses, and lighter too..

Just saying..

Hey Mates (can ya tell im from Australia lol)

In regards to the 2x teleconverter. I was more looking @ it to put onto the 100-400 to give me 800 (i know the quality isn't going to be great, just a big pair of binoculars i guess hehe) but anyhow i can see by not buying the Teleconverter & Speedlight that you are trying to save me money to purchase the better Canon 70-200 IS.

In regards to the body . I think i am still leaning towards the 7D over the 60D due to the faster FPS rate.

I might have a little study up on the Sony though ! 10 fps sounds good .

Thanks for your input ! I have more reading to do now hehe.

Keep the opinions coming people !

if you're going to the 430EX, add a little extra (really not that much with the budget you're talking about) and get the 580EX ii.
it's has much more power that you'll need and use even for home photos.
I have both (the 430 was the first one) and I'm really not sorry that I got the 850EXii as well.

That'll be downright impossible to use. Remember, TCs stop light. A x2.0 TC blocks 2-stops worth of light, so that 100-400 f/4-5.6 becomes a 200-800 f/8-11. At f/11 you've got no light for autofocus (so it wont work) and, even in VERY bright outdoor light, almost no ability to manually focus. AND you'll be fighting DoF, AND you'll be fighting shutter speeds (1/1000 at f/11? no thanks!). Not to mention, your IS likely wont work either.

That's a complete crapshoot, and isn't gonna fly.
