Good Evening,
I have the Nikon D3100 with the 18-55mm kit lens. My photography is mostly portrait shots of my 2 daughters, ages 4 and 1. Thanks to the delightful British weather, I mostly take these photos indoors, in poor light. I've not purchased any additions to the camera at all, so the on-board flash pops and ruins any hope of a good picture. I do want a speedlight flash but that's later .. I'm looking at a replacement lens (or flash, depends which you guys say would be the better purchase) I did have my heart set on the Nikon AF-S 50mm f/1.4. But reading some reviews some people say that the f/1.8 is just as good, if not better for the depth of field. Am I being a little greedy in wanting the f/1.4? I just see that as it allows more light and I need as much as I can get with these girls. I tried a manual focus f/1.8 in our photography store, but manual just will not work with the rate these children move. The other thing is I'm reading different opinions on which length to go for, 35mm or 50mm? Please help! So first, flash or lens?

For the price of the 50/1.4 you could get the 35/1.8 AND the 50/1.8. In some ways the 1.8s are optically superior, and the new 1.8 (avail. June) WILL focus on all bodies.
